However as mentioned in this post Stellaris really suffers from becoming a slog in the late game. I am currently playing both and to be honest they are both great games. If you're up on the fence, ES2 is a better choice.

It's also way more balanced than Stellaris, and every patch fine tunes the game instead of breaking it.

And research is just boring, there are few interesting techs around, only ascension traits are somewhat changing the gameplay.Įndless Space 2 goes for a different approach - every faction is very unique, with their own quest line, style and aesthetics, all the while their research and improvements are more interesting: for instance, you start by moving along the lanes, but can unlock free movement (albeit slow at first) with research, and improve on this with heroes and further research. And while the events and space are very interesting, the empires are NOT: there are several quirks (hive mind or robots play a bit differently from normal races), but in general the races are basically the same - your choice mostly influences politics and social governance, but not basic gameplay. but the game can never be completed, just stopped. Stellaris is very nice at having the exploration for the first several times - the space IS vast and brings surprises, and events like invasion from other dimension or war in heavens are very cool. Endless Space 2 is a game you mostly love but definitely not hate. One small thing to add: Stellaris is a game you both love and hate.

The racial story quests and random challenges will keep you focused and on your toes. A game can take a while, but for me none of it ever feels like I’m clicking “Next Turn” and waiting for something to happen. I’ve played all the races, and tried many paths to victory, and they all feel fun. it’s time to figure out who the winner is. Then it’s time to start forging alliances, developing an army, etc. Once you hit the mid-game and realize you’re starting to have more of “whatever” (ships, money, culture, planets, etc), things start breaking down or coming together right around the point your start getting bored. You eventually hit the other civs, and by that point it becomes a diplomacy and numbers game. Exploration phase lasts long enough to feel fun but not go on forever. I always feel like I’ve got the next 4 turns planned out in my head, and then occasionally something comes by to change what I was doing. I have it another few tries, but every game of Stellaris I’ve tried to play, regardless of how I play it, turns into the same slog.Įndless Space 2 is a bit tighter. My experience with Stellaris was being impressed by the visuals, wowed by what seemed like a lot of depth, and then bored as my first game started to drag on forever and just became a lot of waiting and dialogue confirming. They’re different animals, as others have pointed out. They’re going to scratch different itches, and I know opinions vary, but I greatly prefer ES2 over Stellaris.
